A few months ago I moved from Maputo to Geneva, ideally located in a beautiful environment. It is relatively close to The Hague, so that I can also be there regularly. My work has been quiet for a while, but I will now start painting again. It is only a 15 minute walk from my apartment in Carouge that I look at the Salève, a kind of table mountain that has the nickname the Balcony of Geneva. Indeed, from the top you have a nice view of the city and the lake.
I start with sketching on the iPad in black and white. I am helped by the winter conditions. The mountain wall is powdered with snow, there are many contrasts and surprising forms.
While moving from Maputo to Geneva these months, I participate in the anniversary exhibition of AGA LAB, the former Amsterdam Graphic Studio, where I printed many lithographs from 1983 to 1990. Now my iPad sketches are printed there in the highest quality and exactly as I want it. Nearly 100 artists participate. I show a print of one of the iPad sketches from my paradise, from the African Kikuyu grass. Tonight is the opening.
Exhibition AGA LAB 60 years.
14 September – 12 October 2018
At the beginning of this year I was asked by the Kloosterkerk in The Hague to make illustrations for a book “A velvet bridge” with prayers and meditative texts by Rev. Margreet Klokke. For each of the ten themes I made an abstract illustration on the iPad, based on the idea of my sketches and paintings with the ‘shadows’ theme (as if the ‘sky’ makes paintings on the surface of the earth). It is interesting that religion and art in the book come together in search of inspiration and comfort, each in their own way, but also reinforcing each other. This book is available for € 22 in the Kloosterkerk on a Sunday after the service at the book table, via www.boekengilde.nl/boekenshop and at the Ichtusboekhandels in The Hague and Leiden. The book is also available in the Hooglandse church in Leiden.
