Long ago I have seen a concert of him. That was impressive. I will never forget it. In this drawing I have tried to touch the essence of the blues.

Since early this year, there’s a spectacular chandelier at the entrance of the famous Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. It is composed of many old chandeliers that were gathering dust in the attic.

During this old-men-with-beards month, I discovered Charles Koechlin, a French composer of the early 20th century, whose name faded in unjustified oblivion.
The documentary ‘Genadeloos’ (Merciless) is a portrait of jazz saxophonist Gijs Hendriks. Mr. Hendriks shows himself a man who is very passionate about music. “Without music, nothing remains for me to live,” he says. When I see the determined look in his eyes, but even more his grim mouth formed by fifty years blowing the saxophone, I know that he isn’t joking.
In the newspaper I looked at a picture of an empty gym with rows of tables and chairs. It was as an illustration of the start of the school exams season. At that same moment I also listened to ‘Chairman Dances’ by John Adams. Suddenly everything fell together. The lines of all the legs, cross connections, the lines on the floor, and the tabletops that formed a tremendous sense of depth, along with the rhythmic music that expressed exactly what I saw. The title couldn’t be better! It was like a gift. I got it all for free.
