Exhibition ‘Almas Cruzados’

Tomorrow May 31 the exhibition ‘Almas Cruzados’ by Carlos Simões Ferreira and me in Galeria Kulungwana, Maputo opens until 29 June. Together in his open-air studio a few kilometers outside of Maputo we worked on four paintings as two souls from a different world. These works are on show at the exhibitions. Furthermore, the exhibition consists of new work that we have made individually.
I spent a lot of time in the Simões studio. Many people came along. I experienced the African way of life and I became part of the family. After 20 years in Africa, I have discovered that art is mainly about dreams and fantasy, the discovery of the inner world, and not, as in my own tradition, which is based on perception. It is a privilege that Simões helped me to understand this African perspective better.

v e r t r e d e n week 01 THE COLOGNE CATHEDRAL Wed 30 May to 3 June Upper Room The Hague Art Circle

Rob Thuis made hundreds of photographs at the end of last year in the Cologne Cathedral. The photos were edited, colored and placed in order. With music and a special transition, this provides an animated film, a walk along, through and in “Cologne Cathedral”.

The artists Ad van Riel, Marianne Benkö, Rob van Doeselaar, Ger Groothedde, Alice Bakker and Willem Jager have created or selected a work inspired by the animation “De Dom Van Keulen” by Rob Thuis.

WALK-IN 1 JUNE AND 2 JUNE
During a walk you can invade when you want and stay as long as you want. If you would like to hear and see everything from start to finish, then you are under the pans for about an hour.
On Friday evening, June 1st, there will be a walk-in from 19:30 to 22:00 with a special performance by the men’s double quartet Mannenkoorts.
Also Saturday afternoon, June 2, prior to the opening of the exhibition in the Lange and Hoge zaal, there will be a walk-in from 1 PM to 5 PM. On both occasions poet Edith de Gilde will read  poems and several animations will be shown.

A velvet bridge

At the beginning of this year I was asked by the Kloosterkerk in The Hague to make illustrations for a book “A velvet bridge” with prayers and meditative texts by Rev. Margreet Klokke. For each of the ten themes I made an abstract illustration on the iPad, based on the idea of my sketches and paintings with the ‘shadows’ theme (as if the ‘sky’ makes paintings on the surface of the earth). It is interesting that religion and art in the book come together in search of inspiration and comfort, each in their own way, but also reinforcing each other. This book is available for € 22 in the Kloosterkerk on a Sunday after the service at the book table, via www.boekengilde.nl/boekenshop and at the Ichtusboekhandels in The Hague and Leiden. The book is also available in the Hooglandse church in Leiden.
